The Power of Groups

September 2010 - Second Edition by the Agricultural Management Institute

This Booklet is designed to provide direction, useful hints and inspiration to farmers who may be considering the idea of small farmer-led groups as a new approach to management. It is hoped that this tool will demonstrate the benefits of working in small groups, whether they relate to profitability, quality of life, information-sharing or knowledge development. This Booklet shares the advice of experienced agricultural producers on how to form a group that help improve your bottom line.

Government support for agriculture in the mostly rich countries of the OECD amounted to $252 billion in 2011, or 19% of total farm receipts. Although there is a move away from support linked directly to production, it is still about half of the total. The general trend is downwards: compared with the second half of the 1990s subsidies fell in all countries. But levels of support vary widely. In Norway, Switzerland and Japan, more than half of gross farm receipts in 2009-11 came from support policies; for producers in Australia, Chile and New Zealand, it was less than 5%. Canada is listed at 16%. Reference: The Economist, September 22, 2012 edition.

Below is an excerpt from an article in The Economist magazine:
"Even where there is enough food, people do not seem healthier. On top of 1 billion without enough calories, another 1 billion are malnourished in the sense that they lack micro-nutrients (this is often called “hidden hunger”). And a further 1 billion are malnourished in the sense that they eat too much and are obese. It is a disappointing record: out of the world population of 7 billion, 3 billion eat too little, too unhealthily, or too much."
What could or should be done about this?
