What is the Issue?

When aggregate development is prioritized over other land uses, prime farmland is often placed under threat.

Why Does It Matter?

Provincial legislation recommends the rehabilitation of agricultural land that has been mined for aggregates. But the fact is that such land is rarely – if ever – returned to its previous level of productivity.

What Does CFFO Want?

Agricultural Impact Assessments (AIAs) – The CFFO recommends the implementation of assessments prior to new aggregate developments on or near prime farmland.

Protections for surface water – The CFFO strongly supports all measures to minimize threats to the water table resulting from aggregates mining.
